5.25" floppy drives relied on a small notch in the side of the diskette for permission to write to the disk. A two-sided disk would have a notch on each side. These notches could be covered with stickers to write-protect the disk. Consequently, a notch could be cut in a single-sided disk to enable the second side. This could be done with scissors, and fingernail clippers were the perfect size.
