Asbestos products were commonly used for flooring, insulation, and other purposes in the building trades. They were banned after airborne asbestos particles were identified as a likely carcinogen. Removal of asbestos products from buildings is now considered a hazardous operation, and the preferred method of mitigation is encapsulation.
Producers of Asbestos containing goods were allowed to exhaust existing supplies, and consequently, even homes built well into the 1980s may contain Asbestos.
