Bear-baiting essentially is the act of baiting a bear. By definition, bear-baiting doesn't involve the actual capturing nor any sort of physical combat with a bear - simply the act of baiting the bear, possibly with some sort of cute, small animal.

Bear-baiting also refers to a sport, once popular in England (obsolete by 1835), where packs of hunting dogs would be set upon chained bears, in a gladiatorial-style death match. Other animals submitted to this treatment included bulls and apes tied to ponies. Americans attempted to bait grizzlies with bulls, but the bulls died too easily to put on a good show. Attempts to import lions to replace the bulls did little to alleviate this problem.
