When writing a book or article before word processors, one wold complete a draft and then make three copies. One copy would be put aside for storage, i.e, an old-fashioned backup. The other copy would be annotated and marked up. Then the third copy would be cut up and new paragraphs pasted onto its pages when they had been typed.
While the terms 'cut' and 'paste' are still used in word processing, it's nothing like the old days when you literally used a scissors and glue jar.
