Back in the days when motion pictures were distributed on VHS (and Beta), the movie itself would play in a linear fashion. This in stark contrast to our current attention deficit entertainment we call DVD where scenes are selected on a whim.
Often times VCR tapes would not be "rewound" and thusly the next time you tried to watch it, you would have to first rewind the cassette tape before viewing. This gave rise in the 1980s and mid 1990s to the infamous slogan from video rental outlets; "Be Kind, Rewind".
While not exactly a "skill", one would often find that invariably not performed when renting a movie from say, Blockbuster. It may have been the simplest action to perform, but very few actually did this faithfully that reminders to rewind the tapes sprang up in nearly every video store, and on stickers plastered to the cassettes.
