On the old Kodak cameras (35mm, 135mm etc), if you needed to take a picture with a flash you had to buy a flash cube. These cube had 4 flashes, one on each side. The flashes were not reusable. When you used them, they quite often burned and melted the plastic cover on the outer cube. They had a very distinctive smell also. You had to make sure you removed it if it wasn't needed or you would waste a flash for nothing.
