The skil itself varied from manufacturer to manufacturer but the symptom was always the same, a blinking 12:00. Most times it involved pressing buttons in certain combinations until either the 12 or the 00 was blinking, which indicated that the field could then be edited. Once both fields were edited, the time indicator would display the numbers entered and stop blinking.
