Calligraphy is the art of writing. A contemporary definition of calligraphic practice is “the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious and skillful manner”.

The skill of using Calligraphy is not obsolete. Invitations, such as for a wedding, and the like utilize calligraphy all the time. For one example, with thousands of weddings each year using envelopes that are hand-addressed using Calligraphy, it can hardly be said it is obsolete or only used in “rare” situations.
