Field Automotive maintenance
Went Obsolete 1980s?
Made Obsolete By Sealed, maintenance-free bearings, fittings, etc.
Knowledge Assumed Location of grease fitting on particular make/model of cars
When useful Working on older cars, restorations, hot rods

Older cars required regular lubrication via grease (“zerk”) fittings throughout the entire chassis including the front suspension, wheel bearings, u-joints, clutch linkage, water pump, and more. The task involving locating every zerk fitting on the car and using a grease gun (loaded with the correct lube) to fill the fitting with grease. Most moving parts on the car required regular lubrication. An ace mechanic back in the day would know the location of every hidden grease fitting on a variety of different makes and models of cars as there were sometimes 20 or more lubrication points on the average front suspension. Newer cars feature sealed bearings with lubrication that lasts the lifetime of the part requiring no routine maintence (though it is advised to inspect the bearing/grease at regular intervals).
