Older tape drives: Open the window of the tape drive. Check the ring on the back of the tape. If you will be writing on the tape there must be a plastic ring in place. If you are only reading the tape, take the ring out for safety. Hold the tape so you are looking at the side with the label. Unlock the hub (turn the knob to the left or pull the lever). Place the reel firmly on the hub. Lock the hub (turn the knob to the right or push the lever). Pull out some tape. Thread it as indicated. Usually there are some lines and arrows as a guide. On some models it goes straight past the heads; on others you have to wind it in and out among the tensioners. Wrap the end of the tape around the take-up reel, turning a few turns so that the end is secure. Now close the window and press the “Load” button. After the tape advances to the start mark, press the “On Line” button.
Newer tape drives: Open the window of the tape drive. Hold the reel, still in its carrier, with the label facing you. Push it firmly onto the hub. Press the “Load” button and then the “On Line” button. Watch as the tape drive threads the tape itself.
