I personally remember this transition. In 1972 in 10th grade, all my Chemistry homework was done with a slide rule. When I went to college in 1974, my “big” graduation present was an HP scientific calculator. FWIW, that calculator has long since died, but my slide rules (and my father's slide rules) are still working.
