Arcade games involve a coin operated video game housed in a cabinet with a screen, some external controls, and some internal hardware. These games were most often played standing up, usually in a physical “game arcade”.

There were numerous arcade games and, partly because there were so many, the entire industry collapsed around 1983 or 1984: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_crash_of_1983 The result was that many highly trained specialists in Space Invaders, Pacman, Donkey Kong, and other games were left with obsolete gaming skills.

Today, home consoles such as Nintendo, PlayStation?, and XBox? have made these arcade games, and their attendant skill sets, absolutely obsolete.
