Field Using a TRS-80 (Models 1, 3, 4) with level 2 BASIC
Went Obsolete 1986
Made Obsolete By Inexpensive floppy disks
Knowledge Assumed You have written a BASIC program (or at least typed it in from the latest issue of 80-Micro)
When useful After spending hours doing the above

Cue up a blank cassette tape to a point past the leader (or use a TRS-80 certified computer cassette; they were leaderless). Make note of the number counter. Plug the tiny gray plug into the REM jack, the larger gray plug into the AUX. Press the REC and PLAY buttons simultaneously on the recorder. Note: nothing will happen.

On the TRS-80, type CSAVE ”[NAME OF PROGRAM]” Note: The program can be up to six characters long and include letters and / or numbers. Once you hit ENTER, the cassette recorder will activate. A 16K program may take up to 20 minutes to record. Once done, the TRS-80 will display READY with a prompt.

Rewind the cassette to the start number of the counter (you may have to unplug the REM plug while doing this) and press PLAY. Insert the black plug into the EAR jack on the recorder.

On the TRS-80, type CLOAD? ← Note: The question mark is VERY IMPORTANT. This will start the cassette tape and try to load up the program. If it works, you will get another READY prompt. If there is an error with the recording, the TRS-80 will say BAD. If this happens, try adjusting the recording volume or using a different cassette and repeating the steps above.
