When margarine was first introduced in some regions, it was not legal to have dye already in the margarine lest it be misleading and confused with butter. So margarine was sold in its plain whitish form and came with a separate yellow dye tablet to stir in.
SFAIK colored margarine is still illegal in Quebec Province (Canada), as is importing colored margarine.
