Every town of size had a telegraph office right up to the 1960s, then after that they only survived in the bigger cities. All telegram were delivered by telegraph boys at one time, then the telegrams were eventually telephoned if they were urgent. In the bigger cities a telegaph office could easily have a dozen or more telegraph boys who usually rode bicyles to deliver the telegrams. Most telegraph offices were operated by the railroad companies or big companies such as Western Union. It was this year (2008) that the last telegam was sent by Western Union.
At one time wedding congratulations, notice of deaths, and other news was sent by wire. Mostly it was used for business such as ordering auto parts and sending money by wire. Originally all telegrams were sent via the 'wire' with a telegaph key using Morse code, then in the 1950s the teletype machine came into use and most telegrams were sent this way from one telegaph office to the other.
