There are two different items called a mangle. One is simply a set of rollers that wrings excess water from wet clothes. It was not uncommon for the operator to have his/her hand caught in the mangle and crushed. The other mangle is sometimes called a roller iron, or automatic ironer. It has a large padded roller that rotates against a curved, heated plate, drawing fabric and clothes through it to iron them. Like the washing machine mangle, it is a dangerous piece of equipment that sometimes caused serious injuries.
