Microfiche is still widely used to retain records for long periods of time reliably. This is especially true for legal or legally mandated records in high-reliability industries (e.g. Aerospace and Medical Industries). For records requiring a retention period of greater than 25 years, microfiche reliably stores the data and does not carry the risk of data inaccessibility due to system incompatibilities (As in the case computer files) as it is optically readable.
Research and academic libraries have large collections of books, journals and magazines on microfilm and microfiche, which has not, and probably will never be digitized. The advantage of microfilm/microfiche is that the exact page is reproduced. One can see the advertisements and article placement. When digitized, the advertisements are lost.
