Prior to 1960 or so, folks would often take a walk in the park, often after church. It was popular to carry a walking stick, probably to keep away small vermin and to trip the people you didn't like.
Later, in the 1960s this referred to using Thai stick which made you feel like you were in a park somewhere.
Later still the 'walking stick' referred to the skinny hippies strung out on Amphetamines.
Much later, as you walked through the park you might stick someone with something as you walked. Ergo, walking stick.
Today if you carried a stick in the park you might be arrested as a terrorist or for carrying a weapon and sent to a CIA offshore prison until you revealed the source of the stick.
“It's like the old saying goes- everybody loves a cane!”
