In the old days, when you paid for your net dial-up connection by the minute, it was common to dial up, receive your mail, hang up to read it and write new mails, then go back online to send. The same could be true for when reading long web pages, no need to be online when nothing's happened. Thankfully fixed rate dial-up replaced it, and even more thankfully always-on broadband has got rid of that annoying dial-up beeping and squeaking.
